...her playing is not only musical, beautiful, and technically brilliant, but also has power when needed without losing a beautiful tone.

Rachael Smith has been playing the flute for nearly 30 years. After living in Chicago for 10 years, she moved to Washington, D.C. with her husband, David Agee, the newly appointed drummer for the U.S. Navy Sea Chanters. Recently, Rachael has appeared with the Capital City Symphony, and performed Puccini's Madame Butterfly with Loudoun Lyric Opera. She is also a member of the Columbia Flute Choir, with whom she performed holiday music for the White House public tour visitors, at Fairfax County Old Town Hall, and as part of the inaugural International Low Flute Festival in April 2018.

While in Chicago, Rachael served as principal flute in Northbrook Symphony for six years.  Her freelancing led her to playing church services, musical productions, and for weddings and private events with her flute, viola and harp trio, Tria. Rachael has also performed with Fulcrum New Music Project, Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, Oistrakh Symphony, and as a reoccurring artist on the New Music DePaul concert series.

Rachael has participated in master classes and studied privately with Jeffrey Khaner, Walfrid Kujala, Julius Baker, Michel Debost, Mary Boodell and Les Rotteges, among others. She can be heard on both flute and piccolo with the Philadelphia Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra performing works by George Antheil (New World Records) and with Chicago’s baroque/indie pop group, Sewing Pattern.

Growing up outside Philadelphia, Rachael began Suzuki flute lessons at age three. She went on to win young artist competitions, soloing with several orchestras in the Greater Philadelphia area including the Pottstown (PA), Warminster (PA), and Wilmington (DE) Symphonies. Rachael earned her bachelor and master degrees in flute performance from Temple University's Esther Boyer College of Music in Philadelphia, and DePaul University School of Music in Chicago on a full performance-based scholarship.  Her primary teachers include Kelly McDermott, Kazuo Tokito, and Mary Stolper.

Rachael is a member of the Flute Society of Washington and the American Federation of Musicians, Local 161-710.  She resides in Annapolis, MD.
